Bacan Guaro Is Breaking The Aguardiente Mold As It Brings A Taste of Colombia To The U.S.

Bacan Guaro brings a low ABV aguardiente to the US

Bacan Guaro has arrived in the U.S. The new low-ABV aguardiente is bringing the taste of Colombia north, while also offering a less fiery opportunity to try it. The spirit comes in two strengths (24% ABV and 29% ABV).

Aguardiente, which translates to “fire water,” is a traditional strong alcoholic beverage typically distilled from fermented sugarcane and often flavored with anise, and can be found from Iberia to South America. It’s commonly consumed neat as a shot in social gatherings and celebrations.

Bacan, meaning “cool” or “awesome” in Colombian slang, looks to shift this paradigm. Bacan Guaro is a luxury guaro that is smooth enough to be enjoyed neat, but also made to be used in cocktails. Through this approach the brand hopes to redefine how aguardiente has typically been viewed and consumed.

Bacan is crafted in small batches using meticulously sourced ingredients: first-press organic sugarcane juice, organic Spanish star anise, and water. Skillfully and slowly blended, the result is a crystal clear, elegant, and versatile sugar-free aguardiente available in two strengths:

  • Bacan 24 (48 Proof): This version is characterized by its sweet anise aroma, accented with subtle notes of citrus. Its smooth entry reveals flavors of black licorice, delicate floral and herbal layers, and a lingering spice.
  • Bacan 29 (58 Proof): This light, airy spirit features a delightful nose of anise, black pepper, and rosemary. The anise flavor follows through on the palate, complemented by hints of citrus and ginger, finishing clean and refreshing.

Bacan Guaro is the creation of Colombian entrepreneur and media personality Diana Espinosa March in collaboration with her Italian/Spanish husband and brand architect, Ricardo March. Together, they embarked on a mission to revolutionize how aguardiente is traditionally consumed.

“Our aim was to elevate the aguardiente experience and introduce Bacan to a discerning audience that may have never encountered this unique spirit. It is one of my most cherished traditions from Colombia, and I believe it deserves to be appreciated globally,” says Diana.

Determined to craft an exceptional guaro, they focused on using organic ingredients to create a refined taste profile that appeals not only to Colombians but to discerning palates worldwide. After several years of experimenting, Diana and Ricardo perfected their recipe and process, blending ingredients from South America and Europe.

Debuting in select U.S. markets this summer (Florida, New York, and New Jersey) and available for sale online through the brand’s online store, both Bacan Guaro 24 and 29 retail for $49.99 per 700ml bottle. Those looking to try both strengths can purchase a 200ml luxury gift set for $54.99.
